Daiichi Hi-Speed Line Recycler

The Daiichi Hi-Speed Line Recycler one of the products that I recently just found about am very excited to talk about it. I had one of my customers mention it was a brilliant product for spooling and de-spooling reels. Upon some research I realized how important this product really is.

Have you ever tried to put a pen through the spool and get the wife to hold it while you spool it? Well that's what I commonly have done. This will eliminate the wife and make spooling a much easier process. Also to if you want to get rid of your old line this can easily be done too.

One last point that really makes this product a must is the fact that it can clasped onto to just about any table surface. There is a tension knob that can be adjusted to make a nice tight fit while adding line. Putting on loose line is not good because when you get that large fish the line will actually dig into loosely fitted line thus creating a snag and you can kiss that fish good-bye!!

Here's the link to the Daiichi Hi-Speed Line Recycler.

A simple way to make your own assistant hooks for jigging

I was on youtube and came across this video. Very easy to understand even if it's in Spanish? (I'm sure I'll be in trouble for saying that)

Enjoy! Nigel

Jigging on Wakashiomaru Jan 19th

My friend Wayne and I got out the rods for 2008 and went to target some smaller yellowtails. Sometimes you can do very well with many fishing getting caught. Of course if you're going fishing in January you are sure to have some pretty nasty, windy, wet weather.

Basically this boat goes from 6am to 11am sharp and the fee is only 6,000 yen. I like the price because the location is close and I can still do stuff with the family after. I think I will be using this service more and more….  For you you Tokyo boys we drive about 45 minutes to the boat and this is considered very far ;)

At about 8:00 am I got one! I switched to a jig from Marine bait called the "Shaking Electric" in 150 grams. The flash or finish is simply amazing and it really does have that ELECTRIC feeling to it. I got the hit in about 80 meters of water with in initial hit at about 60 meters or so. So it was hanging quite close to the bottom probably feeding on small bait fish.

After that I switched on and off with Inchiku jigs with one large wopper lost. My rod was completely bent over for about 5 minutes straight. After feeling a POP I thought it was gone but upon retrieve we found a small rock fish hanging off the hook. I think what happened was a small fish got eaten by a large fish, then the big fish decided to let go. Too bad it was a nice fish I think :o

Got the fish home and my son got to experience his first viewing of a large fish. He was ohhh and ahhhhhhhing over it.

Later on at night Wayne and I had some yummy sashimi and pan fried (hot plate) yellowtail with salt/pepper and ponzu (vinegrated soy sauce) to our wife's delight.

Looking forward to going again and please enjoy the video I made.

Until next time folks,

Jigging on the Octopus December 29th

Well I got my tackle ready and went out for some winter buri/yellowtail fishing on the Octopus charter boat. At this time of year yellowtail are the game and even casting for tunas.

Made the journey out to Munakata and the boat ride to the fishing grounds was about 2 hours. We mostly jig around the Tsushima and Iki Islands.

I asked the captain how was yesterday and he replied not very good, oh oh. But they had a nice 50kg plus tuna on which was eventually lost. He told me to get my casting tuna rod ready just in case. They had a massive boil of tunas show up so if this happened again we would hit them hard.

Here is the boil from the day before:

I got two hits on the jig but both times I missed the hook up. Both hits came at about 20m off the bottom. We were mostly jigging in 100m or less all day long. The guy next to me lost two nice ones but both times his drag was set way to high and he was trying to muscle it in too much in my opinion. If you are ever playing these fish take it nice and easy and don't try to horse them up. Their mouths are quite soft and if you try to pull too hard you'll rip the hook right out of their mouths, literally….

Overall action was actually quite terrible and it was the worst I've seen, 9 guys fishing hard and only 2 yellowtail and 1 flatfish. The captain even let us have some bonus time.

I actually decided at about 2pm to give up jigging try some inchiku jigs. I used Daiwa's Pirates 150 gram orange and got two nice Arakabu's (rockfish) so atleast I could show the wife something….

Here's are some report pics:

Well there's always next time, I'm thinking of hitting it again sometime in January. The captain has told me that there are some big schools of Black fin Tuna around so again I'll be ready!!!

The Vertical Jigging knot Noeud

I was on U-Tube and came across this knot from France. Looks like a nice easy knot for vertical jigging. I prefer the PR knot from MC Works but others might find this useful. My only suggestion is to really pull both ends tighter and make the colors change so it'll dig in deeper.

Ikitsuki Mahi Mahi Shore Game October 27th

Well Wayne and I went to Ikitsuki to try our hand on some mahi mahi shore game surfbreaker fishing. We left Fukuoka at 11:30 PM and eventually we got there at 3 AM. We got our sleeping bags and out and prepared to take our much needed naps until fishing time.

The wind was just crazy!! It was shaking the car as we were sleeping. We started at about 7 AM and fished hard all morning. Things were really slow and not many fish were around. Only once or twice did we see a few of them swimming around. One time they came right up to the surfbreaker and almost went for our lures but then took off.

We saw only two fish being caught between 20 anglers or more. I think we were too late and we should have been there two weeks before.

On a positive not I helped a rookie angler land his first mahi from shore and it was his first time out. I used my sliding gaff to perfection and to my surprise it was so easy to gaff the fish. It was only about 70-80cm and took this young angler a long time to land it because he was using his seabass rod, that's why I jumped in and helped the poor kid out. Other than that we saw one wopper landed and that was about it……

UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!

Here's a video I made of the adventure, ENJOY!

Set Up
Rod: Tenryu Power Master PWM 110 H 11 foot
Reel: Saltiga Blast 4500
Line: PE #4
Leader: Saltiga Nylon 60lb

Jigging in Okinawa Naha with Captain Billy

Well my wife and I went to Ishigaki Club Med for a much needed vacation. After 4 days it was time to fish!!!

Eric or also known as Jusjigs picked me up at my hotel and off we went to Captain Billy's boat. We arrived there nice and sharp at 3:45am with coffees and in hand when all of a sudden we saw a long string of cars coming towards us. It was Billy and gang!

What a great idea from Billy, he goes to base to pick up all his customers so they won't get lost on where to go.

We got our rods ready and the captain explained the rules…. I loved this one. Don't put your hands in the fishes mouths, if you do you will loose them because we have big nasty fish! So true

At 6 am we arrived at our spot. I think it's called the PAIOS? They're large yellow buoys out in the middle of the ocean that are to promote fish to hang around and converge upon.

Eric and I casted top water baits at first but after 10 min we weren't having much luck…. Eric says lets go jigging now.

Recently I got a new Satliga 6000z and today was it's debut. Put on some fresh new PE #5 and tied a long 4 meter 60lb leader with the PR KNOT from MC WORKS. My jig of choice was a 120 gram pink butterly jig from Shimano.

The captain explained the fish were showing up around 60 meters so I dropped my jig to about 80 meters or 8 full colors of line. I closed my bail and started to jig hard and fast………… BANG FISH ON. Holly shit Eric that was quick. Now when I say jig hard and fast I was going mad!!!! It was a small 2-3 kg tuna.

I repeated this same technique and every time I had a fish on…. now this is how jigging is supposed to be. Eric and I were just into fish after fish. I think those American GI'z were pretty impressed with our Japanese jigging methods. Oh yeah they were all bait fishing with small sardines.

Best fish of the day for me was a 4 kg rainbow runner and Eric caught a one too for the first time on the jig. We released so many fish only keeping the bigger ones that came through. We may of not caught the biggest fish on the trip but man did we ever get into so many fish making this one fun tiring day for this guy.

Here some pics from the trip….

Thanks Billy and I'm looking forward to joining you again.

Regards,

Shimano Engetsu Bullet jigs are here

bottomshipbulletgld.jpg

Engetsu bullet jigs from Shimano are here and they look real good! I personally haven't tried them but I will give them a go very soon. The shape is quite unique compared to Duel's Inchiku bullet jig. Usually other types have had the same standard shape, narrow at the top widening out towards the base. But these new one's have more of an oval shape and have more flash offering a more appealing hot look.

I first heard about these jigs while watching my favorite fishing show in Japan. The pro angler was dropping the jig to the bottom and when it got there he would slowly retrieve with short pumps on the rod. Between him and the other angler they were catching tons of fish. Part 2 was for larger game like smaller yellow-tail, again same technique and the same result…..fish after fish. I was drooling about how they might work for me.

In conclusion these types of jigs are here to stay and should become a mainstream product for years to come for the jig angler.

You can find these jigs on our web shop here

Daiwa Tornado Spin Tail

tornadospinner2.jpg

The new Daiwa Tail spinner called Tornado have just arrived. I first saw them in Daiwa's Salt Water catalogue and I must admit  I was drooling over them. I've used tail spinners before but generally the spinner was behind the lure. The concept of attatching it near the top fin area is a great idea. Will it produce more fish and hits?

I will buy some for myself to see how they go and report back with reports. Thanks and if  anyone purchases these lures please post your reports here for others to see your progress.

Daiwa Salt Water Catalog

DaiwaSaltwater.jpg

The New Catalog from Daiwa is has some cool new products that are a must for the seabass fishermen. The new spin tail looks great and there's a new type of tuna fishing called EBING or SHRIMPING. Also they cover some squid fishing lures and knots.

The weight of the book comes to just about a 1 lb so shipping prices are a little bit pricy because in Japan shipping is done this way.
